Masses for the Faithful Departed

In this post we are pleased to present a set of black vestments.  The liturgical colour of vestments which have been most rarely made by the Saint Bede Studio over the 25 years of our work is BLACK.  It is obvious that within the Church there is still an unease about wearing black vestments at funerals.

Black vestments

These vestments were made from a black brocade and were fully-lined in taffeta of a dark grey. The chasuble is ornamented with a brocade in colours of slate grey upon black. A galloon of black and silver outlines the TAU ornament at the front of the chasuble and the column at the back.

The vestments of the Saint Bede Studio are beautiful in design, sound in construction and distinctive in appearance.

The chasuble is in the Studio's Saint Philip Neri style, which is the product of years of research into historical vestments and refinement of dimensions for comfortable use.  The Studio revived this more ample 16th century style of the Roman chasuble in 2007 and since then we have made many of them.  Interested readers, beware of poorly-made imitations!

The Month of the Holy Souls : 6

Funeral vestments
It is no secret that in many Catholic dioceses, there is an unease about wearing black vestments at funerals, despite what is set down in the General Instructions of the Roman Missal.  Frequently, there are in place outright prohibitions on the use of black vestments.

This being the case, some years ago the Studio prepared a design for a set of vestments for use at funeral rites by those priests who would prefer not to use white vestments, but are not in a position to wear black.  Adjacent is an image of these vestments, which we call Lux Aeterna.

The vestments are very simple and deliberately so.  A subdued, but not dark shade of violet fabric has been used, avoiding the purple which is associated with Lent.
The chasuble is ornamented with a column at the front and at the back.  This column is formed from two of the Studio's unique braids, both in the Gothic Revival style and in colours of black and platinum / grey.

The vestments of the Saint Bede Studio are beautiful in design, sound in construction and distinctive in appearance.

The Month of the Holy Souls : 5

The Saint Bede Studio
In this post, during the month of the Holy Souls, we are pleased to present a further set of black vestments.  The chasuble is in the Saint Philip Neri style, which was developed by the Studio and based on research into the style of 16th century vestments.

The liturgical colour of vestments which have been most rarely made by the Studio over the almost 25 years of our work is BLACK.  It is obvious that within the Church there is still an unease about wearing black vestments at funerals.  We will write more about this in a subsequent post.

These vestments were made from a black damask and were fully-lined in a grey shade of taffeta. The chasuble is ornamented very simply with a galloon of grey and silver forming the TAU ornament at the front of the chasuble and the column at the back.

The vestments of the Saint Bede Studio are beautiful in design, sound in construction and distinctive in appearance.

Commemoration of the Lord's Suffering and Death

If there were just one occasion when the use of black vestments is self-evidently appropriate, it would seem to be on Good Friday.  And yet, there are arguments against such a usage.

Leaving aside such discussions and without elaboration, we present this set of vestments to illustrate the work of the Studio.

During the Month of the Holy Souls : 2

During this, the Month of the Holy Souls, the Saint Bede Studio is pleased to present sets of black vestments recently completed for our customers.  The post is a continuation from the previous post.

Black vestments

These sets of vestments were ornamented very simply and in a colour scheme of silver and black.  The clavi of the dalmatic were formed from a narrow galloon in silver and grey, whilst the apparel - at chest-height - was enhanced by the use of a black brocade.  The dalmatic was lined with a silvery-grey taffeta.

During the Month of the Holy Souls : 1

Black vestments
During this, the Month of the Holy Souls, the Saint Bede Studio is pleased to present sets of black vestments recently completed for our customers.  The first is a Solemn Mass set and in this post we discuss its chasuble.

The chasuble was made according to the most ancient form of the chasuble, sometimes called the conical form.  It is quite different from the Gothic Revival chasuble in that its shoulder seams are steeply sloped and very long indeed.  It resembles the shape of a cope, but not open at the front.

Conical chasubles

These vestments were ornamented very simply and in a colour scheme of silver and black.  The chasuble's orphrey was formed from a narrow galloon in silver and grey, whilst the chasuble's lining was formed from a silvery-grey taffeta.

The Saint Bede Studio

The image above illustrates how a conical chasuble falls around on all sides when the arms of the celebrant are by his side.

A further post will illustrate the different ways in which the conical chasuble can be worn.

Vestments for Funeral Masses

One of our customers kindly provided us with some photographs of a set of vestments made for his use by the Saint Bede Studio

Black vestments

The photograph was taken at the beginning of a Mass and candle-light procession for the Faithful Departed held on All Souls' night 2021 at the Catholic Chapel of the University of Maryland.

Our customer obtained from the Studio a set of vestments in the Gothic Revival style.  In this instance, instead of being ornamented in the usual silver or gold braids, this set of vestments was lined in crimson red and ornamented with a braid in colours of blue, red and gold.  The effect is most beautiful.

In the Month of the Holy Souls : 2

Black vestments
In this month of the Holy Souls, the Saint Bede Studio is pleased to present this set of vestments, which was made for a returning customer resident in the United States.

The vestments were made from black dupion silk.  A chevron formed from black brocade was framed with one of the Studio's galloons called Saxony, comprising knotwork in burnt orange and black upon a taup background.  This formed the chasuble ornament, front and back.  The vestments were fully lined in a bronze-coloured taffeta.

These vestments are in the Studio's Saint Martin form which is very ample, but carefully shaped to avoid falling upon the wearer like a blanket.
