If there were just one occasion when the use of black vestments is self-evidently appropriate, it would seem to be on Good Friday. And yet, there are arguments against such a usage.
Leaving aside such discussions and without elaboration, we present this set of vestments to illustrate the work of the Studio.
AMDG.
During this, the Month of the Holy Souls, the Saint Bede Studio is pleased to present sets of black vestments recently completed for our customers. The post is a continuation from the previous post.
These sets of vestments were ornamented very simply and in a colour scheme of silver and black. The clavi of the dalmatic were formed from a narrow galloon in silver and grey, whilst the apparel - at chest-height - was enhanced by the use of a black brocade. The dalmatic was lined with a silvery-grey taffeta.

The chasuble was made according to the most ancient form of the chasuble, sometimes called the conical form. It is quite different from the Gothic Revival chasuble in that its shoulder seams are steeply sloped and very long indeed. It resembles the shape of a cope, but not open at the front.
These vestments were ornamented very simply and in a colour scheme of silver and black. The chasuble's orphrey was formed from a narrow galloon in silver and grey, whilst the chasuble's lining was formed from a silvery-grey taffeta.
A further post will illustrate the different ways in which the conical chasuble can be worn.

One of our customers kindly provided us with some photographs of a set of vestments made for his use by the Saint Bede Studio
The vestments were made from black dupion silk. A chevron formed from black brocade was framed with one of the Studio's galloons called Saxony, comprising knotwork in burnt orange and black upon a taup background. This formed the chasuble ornament, front and back. The vestments were fully lined in a bronze-coloured taffeta.
These vestments are in the Studio's Saint Martin form which is very ample, but carefully shaped to avoid falling upon the wearer like a blanket.

These vestments were made in the style now known as Saint Philip Neri, using an English brocade in black and lined with a silk of a muted blue colour. The vestments were ornamented in the Roman manner with a brocade in colours of charcoal and blue and outlined with a galloon in the colour of silver.

On this Good Friday, we wish to feature this set of black vestments, completed for a returning customer, in the Saint Philip Neri style.
The vestments are extremely simple, but in the classic Roman style of ornament. A black damask was used for these vestments, ornamented with silver braids and lined in charcoal-grey taffeta.

The vestments are made from a lovely shade of violet dupion silk and ornamented with a column, back and front, formed from the Studio's unique braids. The chasuble is unlined, but faced around the neckline to make it sturdy and comfortable to wear. Other accessories of the set were fully lined.
These vestments were specially designed for use during Masses for the Dead. They are equally suitable, however, during the Season of Lent.
