On this feast of the martyr, Saint Lawrence, we are pleased to present this red dalmatic.  Made from a European brocade and fully-lined in taffeta, this dalmatic is ornamented with a simple foliated braid in colours of burgundy and straw.

The Season Per Annum 2026 : 6

This set of vestments is in a very different shade of green. It is a brocade which has brighter green ornament woven into a black background. A set of vestments in such a deep shade of green is best used in churches where there is abundant light, otherwise it will look too penitential in its aspect.

Fully-lined in taffeta, this dalmatic is ornamented with one of the Studio's unique braids called ChiRho.  It was designed especially for use with green vestments. This dalmatic is also ornamented with an apparel, rust-red in colour, which has been placed on the front and the back.

Dalmatics made by the Saint Bede Studio all have sleeves which are sewn together from under the arm unto the wrist, as was the case with the dalmatic and tunic from ancient times until the excesses of the Baroque caused them to be stiffened and shortened to look more like a suit of armour.

In this post is depicted an elegant festal dalmatic made by the Studio for an Australian customer to match a set of Low Mass vestments. 

The dalmatic is made from ecclesiastical brocade and fully lined in a rich golden taffeta. In this instance, the choice was made to ornament the dalmatic with a Gothic Revival orphrey braid in colours of red and gold.  

The work of the Saint Bede Studio is distinctive for its artistic qualities and the pains taken with every detail, such as the alignment of ornaments.  Even a restrained set of vestments like this is striking for its combination of colours and fine workmanship.

Passiontide 2026 : 1

As Passiontide begins, we are pleased to make this presentation of a set of vestments in a distinctive decorative scheme.  The colour of these vestments is commonly referred to as Roman purple.  

These vestments are made from an English ecclesiastical brocade, ornamented with a narrower braid in colours of grey and burgundy. 

The lining of these vestments is of taffeta in crimson-red colour.  Perhaps it may be noted that these Lenten vestments do not incorporate any trace of gold ornament.

In the Season of Advent 2025 : 5

As Advent draws to a close, the Saint Bede Studio is pleased to present this simple violet dalmatic. 

The Saint Bede Studio : vestments made by Catholics for Catholics.

Although there are many different shades used for Lenten and Advent vestments (none of which has a claim to being the correct colour), nevertheless, this particular shade of violet is closer to what was used during the mediaeval period and until the beginning of the 20th century.  It is a subdued colour, but not dark, closer to the shade of the flowers violets. 

Instead of the ubiquitous treatment of gold ornament, these vestments are ornamented with galloons of charcoal and silver and are lined in taffeta of silver-grey. The dalmatics are ornamented in a modified form of the Roman manner.

During the Month of the Holy Souls 2025 : 2

During this, the Month of the Holy Souls, the Saint Bede Studio is pleased to present images of a black dalmatic, part of a Solemn Mass set.

The vestments were ornamented very simply and in a colour scheme of silver and black.  The clavi of the dalmatic were formed from a narrow galloon in silver and grey, whilst the apparel - at chest-height - was enhanced by the use of a black brocade.  The dalmatic was lined with a silvery-grey taffeta.

In Paschaltide 2025 : 2

 

In this post, we feature a Festal dalmatic and its maniple.  The set was made from a ecclesiastical brocade in ivory.  A muted green taffeta was used to line these vestments, and they were ornamented with one of the Studio's unique braids, called ChiRho.

The Saint Bede Studio takes particular care with all aspects of its vestment-making.  

In this instance, for example, the maniple has been made to an unusually short length in order to be easier for a deacon to wear it adjacent to the dalmatic sleeve.  A long maniple is particularly inconvenient for a deacon, because of his ceremonial actions during Mass.  No regulation requires a maniple to be a particular length, which allows practicality to be a determining factor.

In this instance, the choice was made to ornament the dalmatic with a galloon in colours of burgundy and gold, enhanced with a trim of crimson red.  A beautiful brocade in colours of gold and red has been used to create an apparel on the front and the back of the dalmatic.

Note the proportions of the dalmatic and its ornament.  The columns of braid (called clavi) are not too widely set apart and are enriched with a neckline ornament.  The whole ornament is formed from crimson silk and narrow galloons.

Penitential Vestments : Our Unique braids (3)

The vestments glimpsed in this post - chasuble and dalmatic sets - were made from dupion silk in a deep and lovely shade of purple and were fully-lined in a crimson red taffeta.  The Saint Bede Studio has made similar vestments on several occasions now and the combination of colours has been found very attractive by our customers.

The vestments are ornamented with one of the Studio's unique braids; it is called Saint Austin.  A matching galloon is also depicted, which trims and highlights the edges.  These braids are directly based on some designs of AWN Pugin which have been preserved on some of his surviving vestments.    

In the attached images, you can see how the wider braid employs diaper-work in colours of red, blue and straw-gold in a continuous pattern.  The colours are vibrant and typically mediaeval.

The Season Per Annum : 8 : our unique braids

The vestments in this post were made from an ecclesiastical brocade in a deep shade of green - green upon black - and fully-lined in a brighter green taffeta.  The Saint Bede Studio has made such vestments on several occasions now and also matching dalmatics.  The combination of colours has been found very attractive by our customers.

The vestments are ornamented with one of the Studio's unique braids, called ChiRho.  Notice how this braid is arranged : the greatest care is taken with all our vestments to ensure that braids are precisely and harmoniously aligned, not cutting away design elements.  

In this post, a section of both a chasuble and dalmatic is shewn.

Red dalmatic

 

In this post is shewn a glimpse of a pair of dalmatics made for a priest in the United States.  The dalmatics were made from a brighter-red shade of English ecclesiastical brocade and lined in taffeta of a taup colour.  

The ornament was formed from one of the Studio's unique braids in colours of platinum on black.  We called the braid Lux Aeterna.  It is also used with black and purple vestments.
