Paschaltide 2026 : 3

In this Easter Season, the Saint Bede Studio is pleased to present a set of festal vestments made in the Gothic Revival style.  The vestments were made from a brocade of bright white and fully-lined in a taffeta muted-gold in colour.

Gothic Revival Vestments
This chasuble is ornamented in the well-known Gothic style,  formed by an orphrey braid based on the work of A.W.N. Pugin.  The colours of this braid are red and gold, with an outlining galloon in the same thread.

The vestments of the Saint Bede Studio are beautiful in design, sound in construction and distinctive in appearance.

What range of vestments does a young priest need ?

The Saint Bede Studio is often asked what a newly-ordained priest needs in the way of vestments, so I present these recommendations, based on years of experience and observation.

The Saint Bede Studio

Ideally, of course, a young priest would own a set of vestments in the Liturgical colours of white, green, red and violet.  Every priest ought to have a set available in these colours.

He needs a chasuble, stole and chalice veil.  Whatever about liturgical requirements or permissions, it is unseemly to dispense with the chalice veil for the celebration of Mass.

Some additional points :

If it can be afforded, a priest should have two sets in different shades of the liturgical colours.  A congregation often appreciates seeing some variety in the vestments that are used.  Remember, it is the congregation which is looking at the vestments during Mass, not the priest wearing them.

Ascensiontide : 3

Conical chasuble

This post features a set of vestments in the Studio's re-creation of the most ancient form of chasuble, often referred to as the conical chasuble.  Most readers of this post will never have seen such a chasuble, which was the only form of chasuble in the West from primitive times until the Middle Ages.

The conical chasuble is like a flattened bell in its shape, with very long shoulders seams.  When it is put on, it completely envelops the wearer and must be drawn up into the small of the arms for convenience.  It is in drawing-up the chasuble in this way that caused it to form the distinctive folds which are so commonly seen in Mediaeval images of the celebration of Mass.  These folds are shewn in the image.

This set of vestments was made from an ivory-coloured dupion silk and lined with a lemon-coloured cloth.  It was ornamented with one of the Studio's unique braids, forming a TAU in the front and a column at the back.  This braid, being a replica of  a mediaeval ornament, is in colours of red, white and straw-gold upon a deep blue background.  It is called Saint Raymund.

Paschaltide 2025 : 8

Modern chasuble

This post features a set of vestments in the Studio's nod to contemporary styles.  This style we call Saint Martin.  It is both long and wide and is especially design to fold up beautifully when the arms of the celebrant are elevated (as is shewn in the adjacent image).

Tasteful contemporary vestments are made by certain studios in Italy, France and Germany, but we also make them here in Australia at the Saint Bede Studio.  This set has a simple dignity and is made from high quality fabrics.

An ivory-coloured damask is lined with a lemon-coloured cloth and is ornamented with a brocade in white and straw-gold, forming a TAU in the front and a column at the back.  The TAU is outlined with a narrow golden galloon.

The Feast of Saint Philip Neri

White vestments

In this Holy Easter Season and on the Feast of Saint Philip Neri, we are pleased to present this set of festal vestments.

Made from a simple white brocade and fully-lined in a shade of gold silk, the chasuble in this post is ornamented with a Renaissance brocade in colours of red upon gold.  A galloon of red and straw-gold outlines the TAU ornament.

The chasuble is in the Studio's Saint Philip Neri style, which is the product of years of research into historical vestments and refinement of dimensions for comfortable use.

Festal Vestments in the Gothic Revival Style

The Saint Bede Studio
In this post, we are pleased to present a glimpse of a set of festal vestments, in the Gothic Revival style.

This set is constructed from a beautiful silk damask in a warm shade of ivory and is lined in a muted shade of golden taffeta.

The ornament was formed from one of the Studio's unique braids in colours of burgundy and gold upon red.   We called the braid Saint Giles and it is among the Studio's most frequently-requested ornaments.

Not also a complementary fringing in colours of burgundy and gold, ornamenting the stole.

Festal Gothic Revival Vestments

In this post, we are pleased to present a glimpse of another set of festal vestments, in the Gothic Revival style.

The Saint Bede Studio
This set is constructed from ecclesiastical brocade and is lined in a shade of lemon taffeta.

The ornament is formed from matching braids, one wider, one narrow, in colours of crimson and straw-gold upon a green background. This is one of the Studio's unique braids called Saint Edmund and is directly based on a design by AWN Pugin.  It features the sacred monogram " IHS ".

Although not elaborate, this is a beautiful and distinctive set of vestments.

Festal Vestments : Our unique braids (2)

The Saint Bede Studio

The vestments in this post were made from a magnificent ivory-coloured English brocade and were fully-lined in a muted-gold taffeta.  The Saint Bede Studio has made similar vestments on many occasions now and the combination of colours has been found very attractive by our customers.

The vestments are ornamented with one of the Studio's unique braids; it is called Saint Giles.  Notice how this braid is arranged : the greatest care is taken with all our vestments to ensure that braids are precisely and harmoniously aligned, not obscuring design elements.

In the attached images, you can see how the braid features burgundy medallions or roundels which enclose a stylised Gothic Cross.  But the background colour of the braid is red.  The colours are vibrant and typically mediaeval.

Saint Philip Neri vestments

Saint Philip Neri vestments

For this post, we are pleased to present a very simple set of vestments, made in the traditional Roman style.  The vestments are made from a beautiful ivory brocade and fully-lined in a shade of gold silk.  The chasuble in this post is ornamented in the well-known Roman style, a TAU at the front and a column at the back, formed simply by an out-lining golden galloon.

The chasuble is in the Studio's Saint Philip Neri style, which is the product of years of research into historical vestments and refinement of dimensions for comfortable use.  The Studio revived this more ample 16th century style of the Roman chasuble in 2007 and since then we have made many of them.  Beware of poorly-made imitations!

Section of a Gothic chasuble made from ivory ecclesiastical brocade and ornamented with the Studio's Saint Giles braid.

This set of vestments is not elaborate, but is well-made and will be serviceable for many years.  There is much to be said for vestments of simple dignity, eschewing the principle "too much is never enough."

Festal Vestments in the Gothic Revival Style

Gothic Revival Vestments
We are pleased to present these images of a set of vestments recently made by the Studio for a Parish in the Archdiocese of Sydney (Australia).   This set is made in the Gothic Revival style and is pointed at the lower edge of the chasuble front and back.

The Saint Bede Studio

Our customer requested a set of vestments with an understated design and we produced something with the colour scheme of ivory, buttercup yellow and red.  The ground fabric is a beautiful English floriated brocade in a shade of ivory.  The vestments were lined in taffeta in a muted shade, buttercup.

Gothic Revival Vestments

These vestments were ornamented in the Gothic manner with one of the Studio's unique braids in shades of red, burgundy and straw gold; it is called Saint Giles.  This braid we have used over the years to ornament vestments in all the Liturgical colours, with the exception of Rose.  It is distinctive because the figured ornament of this braid is very restrained and punctuates the basic red colour.  This simple ornament is effective from a great distance.  This braid is woven for the sole use of the Saint Bede Studio.

White vestments

For most of our chasubles, the perimeter is trimmed with a narrow galloon.  Such galloons, too, have been woven for the Studio's exclusive use.  In this instance, the galloon is a simple design of quatrefoils in gold upon a red base.

Festal Vestments : 1

In this Paschal Season, we are pleased to present some vestments made for Festal days, but which would also be suitable throughout the Eastertide.

Saint Philip Neri vestments

This set of vestments is in the style we call Saint Philip Neri.  It is a modern interpretation of the chasubles illustrated in various depictions of Saint Philip.  Although ornamented in the Roman manner, this is an earlier and more traditional form of "the Roman chasuble" being both wider and longer.  As made by the Saint Bede Studio, this style of vestment is very comfortable to wear.

This particular set was made from an ecclesiastical brocade in a shade of ivory, it was lined in a golden taffeta and ornamented simply with an outlining golden galloon.

Priestly Ordinations 2018 : 2

Each year, the Saint Bede Studio has the privilege of preparing sacred vestments for priestly Ordinands.  Happily, 2018 is no exception.

In this post, we are pleased to draw attention to the ordination of Father Peter Saucedo of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles (USA).  Father Saucedo was ordained to the Sacred Priesthood in the Cathedral of our Lady of the Angels on 2nd June by the Archbishop, the Most Rev'd Jose Gomez.

Father Saucedo commissioned a set of festal vestments from the Studio in the Gothic Revival style for his First Holy Mass.

The vestments were made from an English ecclesiastical brocade in a shade of ivory and ornamented with a braid in colours of red, burgundy and straw-gold of the Studio's own design. The vestments were lined in gold-coloured taffeta.

Please pray for Father Saucedo and for all newly-ordained priests.
