For Laetare Sunday 2019

Twice a year, the Church breaks the tone of its penitential seasons by the use of rose-coloured vestments.  Rose-coloured vestments were never commonplace and they still are not.  Many different colours have been deemed by the Church as acceptable as liturgical rose.  Some of these are a salmon shade; some a silvery-pink, almost mushroom-colour; some close to what we would call Bishop's purple or fuchsia; and some red with overtones of gold.

We are pleased to feature this chasuble set, made from dupion silk and lined in a subtle pink shade of taffeta. The orphrey of this chasuble is formed from a new braid designed by the Studio and called Saint Charles.  The braid has been especially designed for use with Rose and Indigo-violet vestments.

Festal Gothic Revival vestments

The Studio has recently produced these vestments for a returning customer, a priest of the Diocese of Columbus (Ohio).  Since our customer's parish is dedicated to Saint Patrick, a festal chasuble with green in its ornamental scheme was requested.

The chasuble was made from a lovely English ecclesiastical brocade and lined in a soft-shade of green taffeta.  The ornament was formed from one of the Studio's unique braids, ChiRho.

On the importance of returning thanks

On the way to Jerusalem Jesus was going through the region between Samaria and Galilee.  As he entered a village, ten lepers approached him. Keeping their distance,  they called out, saying, “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!” When he saw them, he said to them, “Go and show yourselves to the priests.” And as they went, they were made clean.  Then one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, praising God with a loud voice.  He prostrated himself at Jesus’ feet and thanked him. And he was a Samaritan.  Then Jesus asked, “Were not ten made clean? But the other nine, where are they? Was none of them found to return and give praise to God except this foreigner?”  Then he said to him, “Get up and go on your way; your faith has made you well.”

In this Lenten Season

On this First Sunday of Lent, we are pleased to present this recently-completed chasuble for the penitential seasons.  The vestments are made from a deeper shade of violet ecclesiastical brocade and are lined in Royal blue taffeta.  This ample chasuble in the Gothic Revival style is ornamented with one of the Studio's unique braids, based on a design by AWN Pugin.

As Lent Approaches

The Saint Bede Studio recently completed a chasuble in a semi-conical form for a priest customer in the Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis (USA).

This is a chasuble in Roman purple dupion silk and ornamented with one of the Studio's unique braids.  The vestments were lined in red silk.

Australia's Pioneering Catholic Bishop

The Archbishop of Sydney, the Most Rev'd Anthony Fisher O.P., has approved the publication of a card commemorating the life of his predecessor, 
ARCHBISHOP JOHN BEDE POLDING O.S.B. (1794-1877). 

Archbishop Polding was the pioneering Catholic bishop in Australia, being appointed Vicar Apostolic of the entire continent in 1835, and subsequently Archbishop of Sydney and Metropolitan of Australia in 1842.  

Archbishop Fisher indicated that he wished to see devotion to Archbishop Polding spread throughout the Archdiocese, Australia and beyond.

Part of the commemorative card is shewn in the adjacent image.  Artwork for the card was carried out by The Saint Bede Studio.

Priestly Ordinations 2018 : 5

Each year, the Saint Bede Studio has the privilege of preparing sacred vestments for priestly Ordinands.  Happily, 2018 was no exception.

In this belated post, we are especially pleased to draw attention to the ordination of an Australian Father Namora Anderson of the Archdiocese of Canberra and Goulburn.  Father Anderson was ordained to the Sacred Priesthood in the Cathedral of Saint Christopher on 7th September last by the Archbishop of Canberra & Goulburn, the Most Rev'd Christopher Prowse.

Father Anderson commissioned a set of festal vestments from the Studio in the Gothic Revival style for his Ordination, in addition to a linen albe.  The vestments were made from a beautiful English damask in a shade of ivory and ornamented with Puginesque braids of the Studio's design, in colours of red, burgundy and platinum-gold.  The vestments were lined in a wine red-coloured taffeta.
